Inside/Out is a musical exploration of the depth and complexity of the human personality. Our individual personalities bind together a multiplicity of emotions, beliefs, and motivations into a coherent self, and some character traits which are deeply meaningful on the inside are not immediately apparent to someone observing from the outside. Inside/Out juxtaposes two contrasting musical characters: a chorale-like arpeggiated texture which begins softly in the background and gradually asserts itself with increasing strength, and a sharply angular motive which initially saturates the whole range of the instrument but eventually splits and shrinks to a single note. Thus, intense and sudden changes of character are an integral part of the piece, and the contrasts between the various dynamics, articulations, and registers offer the performer many creative opportunities for expression.
